Private-credit & direct-lending funds

Hayfin Capital Management

Europe-focused alternative asset manager deploying senior-secured direct loans to upper mid-market and large-cap companies, predominantly PE-sponsor-backed.

What they do

Hayfin is a London-headquartered alternative asset manager founded in 2009, operating across private credit, liquid credit, and private equity solutions. Its flagship Direct Lending strategy provides senior-secured, floating-rate loans to middle and upper mid-market European companies, with over €23 billion deployed through that strategy alone since inception. The firm works predominantly with private equity sponsors across LBO financings, add-on acquisitions, and refinancings, complemented by a non-sponsor origination capability. Alongside direct lending, Hayfin runs Special Opportunities and Tactical Solutions strategies that address more complex or bespoke capital needs across the capital structure.

Where they fit in a lower-mid-market raise

Hayfin is relevant when a PE-backed business in the European upper mid-market — typically with significant EBITDA and an established sponsor — requires a large senior or unitranche facility, often in excess of €50–100m. Their scale and multi-fund platform means they can hold large bilateral positions, co-underwrite, and provide certainty of execution at size. They are particularly active in healthcare, technology-enabled services, and business services sectors where sponsors seek a single, relationship-based lender.

Where they are not the fit

Hayfin is not a fit for the UK lower mid-market. Their fund scale (flagship funds in the €6–7bn range) and publicly evidenced deal flow (individual transactions in the hundreds of millions of euros) place their deployment appetite well above the £3–15m facility band. Companies without private equity sponsorship are rarely their primary target, and businesses below a substantial EBITDA threshold are unlikely to meet their portfolio construction criteria. Non-sponsor, owner-managed businesses seeking sub-£20m facilities should look to dedicated lower mid-market or challenger lenders.
